Legends of Lost Nevada
Nevada’s a mysterious place. With history and mystery as far and wide as the Great Basin, there’s plenty out there to let your imagination run wild in the Sagebrush Sea. I still can’t figure some of these stories (and locations) out. I’ll never stop trying.
A long, complicated, and sensitive true story that still divides many Nevadans, itโs the story of one of the longest, and most confusing court cases…
This massive acreage gets skipped over a lot, at least by the average person. But to anthropologists, chemists, theologists, spiritualists, billionaire hoteliers, astronauts, Hollywood actors,…
True mystery and real isolation. And with pronghorn antelope, insanely dark skies, flowing hot creeks, and massive black fire opals as your compass, it’s the…
Becoming manโs best friend alongside this countryโs first people, itโs the story of original friendship, and that of Danger Cave: one of the oldest canine…
I hereby swear on Nevada backroads to never overload your inboxes, ever.
The Kestrel Caller enewsletter will soar into your inboxes about once a month with info about new Song Dog Silver online store updates and upcoming in-person events, the latest story from my blog series Legends of Lost Nevada (where you can read or listen), and sometimes a rare combo of the two.
What a crazy thought it is that so many people in this world will never know what itโs like to experience the *true meaning* of nightfall. They say that the human eye can only process 2,500 stars, but I know that canโt be true out in Nevadaโs ultra-rurals. Thereโs moreโfar more. ๐
And what how freakin cool it is that my work with @patagoniareno and our conversation about Nevada Public Lands experiences aligns with International Dark Skies Week?? To my Reno-area people! Cocktails at 6, SHOWTIME at 7 today, April 7! Hope to see you, and celebrate our love of our home state and the sacredness of experiences that await on our beloved Public Lands. ๐ค
There have been a lot of feelings that come with publishing a book, but Iโll say this: nothing will top to the shared feelings of love and astonishment of, and unfailing allegiance to Nevada with *Nevadans*. ๐
I was on a bit of a hiatus there for a few months but the book tour is BACK starting ***Saturday, April 4th at the legendary JT Basque in Gardnerville NV at 10 AM***. Hear Nevada stories, grab a Picon and steak sandwich, all from within the walls of a place I wrote about in the book. ๐๐ท๐
AND THEN! Join me at ***Patagonia Reno Tuesday, April 7 at 6 PM*** in the name of loving the thing that usually means the most to Nevadans: our public lands. Theyโre graciously hosting a cocktail hour at 6, with a conversation and signing to follow. ๐ Hope to see ya!
I love a wild and wooly one but this one has been better to look at than put your body in since about 2018 ๐ She pretty thoughhh ๐ฅ๐ฅ #hotwater #insagebrushwetrust…
What a magical sight to behold you are, Nebraska.โจ
โฆAnd a lot more like Nevada than many of you may believe. Then again any place with dirt roads, farm kitties, blazing sunsets, excellent birding, and your people is sure to feel like home. ๐ #thegoodlife…
How about a couple โTHATS A GOOD BOY!โโs to this 9 year old baby angel birthday boy!!? ๐
Weโve taken a lot of really great pics of our boy that will allow him to live on forever (I can think of several hundred in the book), but nothing tops this one, when the three of us were in the last few miles of completing the 43-mile Ruby Crest Trail. He knew. We all knew weโd never forget it.
Happy 9th to the very best boy! We love you more than basically everything, Elks ๐๐๐ #ElkoBear…
I couldnโt think of a better representative for small business and ultra-rural Nevada than my friends Liz and James Woolseyโthe heartbeat behind the one and only @stargazerinnnevada and Bristlecone General Store out of Baker, NV. They are accompanying Senator Cortez-Masto in DC as her special guest for the State of the Union today. So pumped to have you there representing so many of us, Liz ๐งก๐งก๐งก
If you havenโt been to their place, positioned at the gateway to Great Basin National Park, GO. What theyโve cultivated there is THE eastern Nevadaโs arts, cultural, and community epicenter. You can read more about their store, motel, and lives in FNW, but they kicked off my book tour last fall, and Iโm thrilled to be back there again in June, this time talking about the Cave Bear. See more info about it on my site (with other 2026 dates) and look for Liz in ORANGE on the floor tonight! ๐ #InSagebrushWeTrust…
It was a restful (?) holiday where I may or may not have abused my internet privileges by sharing too much about horrible reality TV and a Reno rat infestation. But! Iโm back, and with sound mind to tell you about a super exciting event this week in Zephyr Cove ๐
TOMORROW, Tuesday, Feb 10 the FNW book tour is back in action with the one and only @skirunpresents at the Gear Lab. Itโs an honor to be part of this roster of storytellers, to say the least. Doors at 6, event begins at 630. Register at the link in my stories (free!) to let us know youโll be there! Weโll share stories, do some Nevada trivia, drink beers, and sign/sell books. Iโll even have some new turquoise there too.
See ya tomorrow at 6! ๐ชถ #FindingNevadaWild #skirunpresents
With all these fancy new tools I landed over the holidays and a whole lot of newfound inspiration from Elko, here comes a Song Dog Silver shop update, Sat. Feb 7 at 3 PM PST! ๐ชถ
I got this really cool new rolling mill, which makes design impressions onto the silver. A leaf pattern Iโm calling Natureโs Lace caught my eye, along with another that reminds me of topography lines. These patterns are on almost every piece! In this update, youโll find some classics, along with some new items Iโve been thinking about for a long time, including these Sterling Silver and moonstone button covers. Thereโs also a super cool agate bolo in there, some flashy Apple Watch charms that slide right onto the band, and some emerald rose turquoise earrings that may just be my very fave of the batch.
Whatever doesnโt sell in the next couple days, Iโll be sure to bring with me at @skirunpresents on Tuesday, Feb 10! We are very excited to bring the book, silver, and other swag to our Tahoe area friends very soon. ๐ #SongDogSilver #InSagebrushWeTrust…
Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.
I shot this photo on a dawn morning at the Cottonwood Ranch in Nevadas upper right hand corner during a sage grouse observation. It will live on as a magic momentโwatching the sunlight kiss the tippy tops of the sage as far as the eye could seeโwell, forever. So happy it could represent this beautiful, misunderstood place as the inside front and back image of the book project, too. ๐ #FindingNevadaWild…
Everything really IS better with cow(boy poet)s around๐ค
Thanks for having me out for my 11th consecutive year shooting for you, @cowboypoetrygathering ! Itโs always dreamlike being there, and inspires me in ways no other place will. Until next year, please enjoy Elko (my part-cow dogโs) fave dirt roads rippinโ tune alongside some of my favorite moments from the 41st National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Thanks for making me so happy all these years ๐ค #InSagebrushWeTrust…
The headline is we drove miles into a freakin mine and I donโt think I liked it. Lots and lots and lots of people do this all the time, but there is something so SO wrong about this ๐ฅด #InSagebrushWeTrust…
Hereโs hoping 2026 is filled with (unpeopled) views like this, that long range of Western light, your dog smiling out the back window, and roads that never, ever end โจ #FindingNevadaWild…
Inspired by all my favorite experiences in the Great Basin State, of course ๐
You may recognize this amazing map my friend made for my book, which originally ran in different color ways in Chapter 2. Now itโs on my fave tees and sweatshirts! I have offered preorders in the past with not a lot of responseโyouโll find the most common unisex sizes on my site in limited numbers, available now. ๐ชถ #InSagebrushWeTrust…
Alright yโall. I know Iโve been posting a lot of unhinged shit lately (being stuck in your house for 2 weeks straight will do that to you) but now Iโm coming to you honestly and sanely with a very important message that directly impacts one of my most favorite places on the planet: Big Smoky Valley and Highway 50. ๐๐จ
There is an astronomically absurd project being proposed called Greenlink North. I am all for searching for renewable energy solutions when it doesnโt come with the cost of *so much* and at the expense of a place thatโs become part of me, but thatโs exactly what this project intends to do. It proposes a massive power line that would run from Fallon to Ely that would CLEAR CUT A HALF MILE WIDE OF TERRAIN ALONGSIDE 50. A route thatโs been used by people and animals for thousands of years, the environmental and cultural impacts of this would be horrific. And! It gets worse.
The project also proposes several massive solar fields that feed the power line, one of which is my beloved Big Smoky. Real darkness and quietness, unreal brushes with wildlife, some of my favorite dirt roads in the state, aloneness, hot springs, the longest mountain range in Nevada, pictographs and petroglyphs, and authentic community reign in Kingston and the Big Smoky. I can say with certainty that if this project were to actually happen, moments like these would only exist in memory. And, I just canโt have that happen. Iโm sure many of you feel the same way.
The community of Kingston is composed, collected, and alongside a really smart group of environmental attorneys, an alliance determined to fight this. In the next slide youโll find their official statement on the project, and a QR code that I really hope youโll follow to petition against the no good very bad Greenlink North. Weโve had to defend our public lands from these disasters a lot lately, and I know we can do it again. ๐#InSagebrushWeTrust…
This past year was a challenge culturally, but man. It also feels like it was the year we were finally able to dig ourselves out of some really difficult and confusing times, bringing us closer to celebrating our favorite places on the planet, Nevadans, and each other. The culmination of a lot of hard work and tantrums you didnโt get to see, I know 2025 is a year we will never, ever forget. ๐
We didnโt get to go camping much but when we did, at least we caught it on camera. Canโt wait to see where the Big Empty brings us in 2026 โจ #insagebrushwetrust
THIS COMMUNITY, HOLY MOLY. ๐ฅ๐ฅ I am in in complete and total awe of you all the time but especially this time of year. Thanks for spending your money where it matters, turning out for me at the Saint Maryโs Art Center, and after the news segment todayโitโs been a busy day of packing orders and I havenโt stopped smiling the whole freakinโ time.
I made the last shop update of the year and if you have your eye on something, better head to the site and snag it. These fingers are officially in retirement until 2026! ๐ #InSagebrushWeTrust
