History and Mystery are Alive in Nevada’s Sagebrush Ocean
Legends of Lost Nevada
Legends of Lost Nevada
Nevada’s a mysterious place. With history and mystery as far and wide as the Great Basin, there’s plenty out there to let your imagination run wild in the Sagebrush Sea. I still can’t figure some of these stories (and locations) out. I’ll never stop trying.
This massive acreage gets skipped over a lot, at least by the average person. But to anthropologists, chemists, theologists, spiritualists, billionaire hoteliers, astronauts, Hollywood actors,…
True mystery and real isolation. And with pronghorn antelope, insanely dark skies, flowing hot creeks, and massive black fire opals as your compass, it’s the…
Becoming man’s best friend alongside this country’s first people, it’s the story of original friendship, and that of Danger Cave: one of the oldest canine…
I hereby swear on Nevada backroads to never overload your inboxes, ever.
The Kestrel Caller enewsletter will soar into your inboxes about once a month with info about new Song Dog Silver online store updates and upcoming in-person events, the latest story from my blog series Legends of Lost Nevada (where you can read or listen), and sometimes a rare combo of the two.
Sometimes I feel like I’m so freakin’ happy in our little family bubble of four—Jonny, Elko, Ruby and I—that I worry something is on the brink of going *really* wrong. Like I have to savor every single second together while we’ve got it, especially after making a lot of tough choices, carefully (and sometimes painfully) reshaping the way we want to live our lives. But I guess there are worse things to be than grateful.
Throughout 15 years we’ve weathered the best and worst versions of ourselves and each other with one constant: together. And you know, even through those mountain summits and narrow canyons, I know there’s no other person I’d rather be riding with on this long and windy desert rip. Elks and Ruby, too.❤️🔥 #15…
Nevada’s first, and one of its largest wilderness areas ✔️ Bloody Mary’s & Sourdough Pancakes ✔️ Nevadas only Class I Airshed ✔️ Basque Arborglyphs (like entire groves of them) ✔️ Lost Legends and Nevada Storytelling as real as it comes ✔️ A fish on every cast ✔️ …And two amazing bars at the end of 68 miles of dirt roads ✔️✔️
The book was almost called “The Last Campsite in Jarbidge” if you can believe it—that’s how much the spirit of this project also lives in one of my favorite ultra-remote corners of Nevada: Jarbidge. And, with Jarbidge Jane’s gift shop the first vendor of Song Dog, you know we had to include this fabled place on the book tour. It’s the sort of place where, if you haven’t been, it’s probably on your list.
This Sunday the three of us will be set up inside the Jarbidge Community Hall ready to swap Nevada stories. Hope you’ll stop by and clink a pint with us—Elko told me he’s buyin’ 🍻✨ #InSagebrushWeTrust #FindingNevadaWild…
Finding Nevada Wild 🎯 • Silver City, we’re comin’ for ya this Saturday! If you’re local to the Reno area and maybe missed our other two in-town events, the Silver City School House is such an amazing little surprise right up the hill. We’ll be there from 4-6 this Saturday and, if it’s anything like Baker or Ely, I know we’re bound to tie one on together in the name of our favorite state 🪶 #InSagebrushWeTrust…
I know I’ve been coming in hot with all this book stuff, but man. These are exciting times for us after a lot of really tough and confusing ones. And while we’ve been shouting the book project from the roof tops for months now, TODAY is officially my BOOK BIRTHDAY! Up until now, all those orders have been preorders (1,500+ somehow), but she’s *out* out as of today and I can’t stop smiling big. 🪶
To this community: thanks for taking me seriously. It’s a love letter to my husband, my dog, and this amazing state. If you’re a Nevadan, I hope I made you proud. This is my dream, and with a lot of hard work, it came true. And you know, I hope this exact caliber of happiness I’m feeling these days hits everyone like a truck at some point in life. ❤️ #InSagebrushWeTrust…
There’s no place I’d rather spend National Public Lands Day than at some of my all-time favorite free lands to openly roam. That Rock Glacier IS my favorite place—Nevada or not—to scream at the mountains. 🌚
Bask in the bedazzlement of some of Nevada’s finest darkness and quietness, hike (or look at) some of the pointiest mountains around, experience some mind-bending fall foliage, and maybe even join in on some Nevada trivia at my author talk and book signing TONITE at the perma-amazing Bristlecone General Store at 6 PM. See ya over on the east side ❤️🔥 #FindingNevadaWild #InSagebrushWeTrust…
After many months of hard work and awe-filled belief from @coyotecreativemedia, the whole team is so freakin’ excited to introduce this project: a SHOW that’s coming, based off the book and the three of our lives exploring and documenting the Great Basin State—Jonny, Elko, and I—also called Finding Nevada Wild. ✨
An enormous thanks as far and wide as the Great Basin to @coyotecreativemedia with @scottycar producing, @blinky.35mm on camera, and @mruocco as editor. Thank you for believing in us and this misunderstood place, and for making our dreams come true.
Fired up about these 3-in-1 cups from @wyldgear and they’re comin’ with me THIS WEEK on the Finding Nevada Wild book tour! ❤️🔥 There’s a built in bottle opener on the bottom, and this thing comes with 2 lids—one for bottles/cans, and another for hot or cold drinks.
I’ll be gifting one at all nine stops of the tour to someone in the audience—hopefully that’s YOU! And if not, a few extras are up on my site, starting now. 🌚#InSagebrushWeTrust…
I guess every deck comes with two jokers, don’t it 😵💫
Never thought Public Lands would be the thing that unites us. But, it’s the most American thing we have and using them freely is the most American thing we can do, ESPECIALLY as Nevadans. That quest is also largely what my book, Finding Nevada Wild, is about.
But now, this Roadless Rule, which has protected places like Mt. Moriah, the Ruby Mountains, the High Schells, and Table Mountain for decades is being challenged. I thought we were done with this Public Lands battle royale, but if the Roadless Rule were to go away, it would compromise 3 million acres of Nevada’s public lands, allowing stuff like large scale logging, road construction, and oil and gas leasing.
They kinda pulled a fast one on us, the US Dept. of Agriculture, specifically Brooke Rollins, only allowing the public to comment in a short time—20 days. We’ve got now through Sept 19—NEXT FRIDAY—to use our voices to defend the thing that actually makes us Nevadans, Westerners, and Americans.
And, if you submit your public comment by 09/19/25, leave a comment on this post letting me know you did. I’ll be giving away a copy of Finding Nevada Wild, 📚✨drawing a winner 09/20 in honor of keeping Nevada public since its state constitution was formalized in 1864. #InSaebrushWeTrust…
To the Grand Fellowship of Nevada Admirers: it sure is great to be among you 🌚
I hope you take this as your chance to tell me the most Nevada thing you know this weekend at the Finding Nevada Wild public debut! 🚨 I’ll be at the Barnes and Noble signing copies from 10-1, and later, on a panel and part of the @nevada_humanities Nevada Lit Crawl at the Nevada Museum of Art from 3:30-4:30.
Looking so forward to saying hey-how-are-ya to many old and new friends. Hope to see ya! ❤️ #InSagebrushWeTrust #NevadaHumanities…
Hope you don’t mind your books smelling like high octane racing fuel 🔥🔥🔥
It’s an insanely special thing both of our dreams came true in general, but especially at the exact same time. I can tell you all with certainty it didn’t happen magically or suddenly, but with a lot of very low lows, and a whole lot of propping each other up when we wanted to do anything but work on the Nova or the book—times def *not* featured in the highlight reel.
I love this life with you, Jangy. We’ve really been through it in more ways than I can begin to explain in this post and there’s no other absolute maniac I’d rather spend it with, I know that. ❤️🔥 #InSagebrushWeTrust…
We officially got a small (mostly) rural Nevada book tour in the works!! Hope to see ya out there. In the meantime, thanks for making me look cool with the amazing poster design, @gomezsigns 🌚
My book, Finding Nevada Wild, is now officially available to purchase through me directly on my site, with copies scheduled to land on my doorstep and off to you sometime next week. Look for more complete updates (like specific times and other info) in my newsletter, the Kestrel Caller. It’s all happening! ⚡️ #InSagebrushWeTrust…
I’ve begged and pleaded with Elko to howl on our thousands of camping trips throughout the years together. And despite often being surrounded by plenty of singing song dogs just outside our camp, he’ll never join in. But that’s ok, he will always be MY song dog. He’s usually at my feet as I make most of my silver, that’s for sure.
We’re here to howl at you to save the date! This Saturday, August 23, I’ll be at the wonderful @eddystreetvintage for their Legends of the West-themed show. Elks is way too wily to join, but I’ll be there with the turquoise we’ve made. I’ll be there from 10-5! Hope to see ya. Maybe you’ll even be compelled to give me your best howl🫶🏻 #InSagebrustWeTrust…
Hey Jangy: remember when you, me, and Elko made a book about our lives exploring the Great Basin? I guess it looked kinda like this 🌚
My advanced, lone author copy is on its way to me in the mail as we speak, and man, I can hardly wait to have it in our hot little paws. It’s going to be so special to show you guys just what the hell we’re up to out there all the time, too ✨
AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 28, everywhere books are sold ❤️🔥 #InSagebrushWeTrust…
I hereby swear on Nevada backroads to never overload your inboxes, ever. Instead, rely upon Song Dog Silver updates, fresh Legends of Lost Nevada, and sometimes a rare combo of the two.
